What happens when four guys try to cross the Atlantic…in a rowboat

I have all sorts of reasons for doing or not doing things. I usually consider the obvious:

Is it going to hurt?
Will this kill me?
Is there a monetary reward?

I can’t think of a single good reason to attempt what these four guys did, although their effort was brilliant.

Adam Kreek has just finished a four-hour overnight shift rowing through thrashing wind and waves. The two-hour nap he’s owed is even more welcome than usual as darkness fades into morning. Kreek, 32, and three crewmates had set off Jan…continue reading (via NextDraft)

FAQ: All Your Hyperloop Questions Answered

If this works, it would be amazing. I know they keep using the examples of trips out on the west coast, but what about across the Midwest? Instead of just being flyover states, we could be shuttle across states too. Just think of those marketing opportunities.

Seriously though. Can you imagine living in Des Moines and commuting back and forth to Chicago for work every day? In about double the time you commute now just to get downtown? Fantastic!

These guys at Tested really lay this out in understandable terms.

New York to Los Angeles in 45 minutes? Hold on there, tiger. Elon Musk’s seemingly radical plan for the Hyperloop, which would blast people across the entirety of the United States in under an hour, is out. Sort of…continue reading

Unroll.me, A Startup That Battles Junk Mail And Manages Subscriptions, Says It Has 100K+ Subscribers

Unroll.Me is pretty amazing. On a typical day, my daily Unroll.Me email has 20 or so newsletters, advertisements, daily deals, etc., that I’ve chosen to put there. These were things to which I did not want to unsubscribe, but I didn’t want them cluttering my inbox either. The daily digest first thing in the morning is great for getting a quick glance at each of these without having to delete 20 individual emails every day. It’s so nice.

I’ve also used Unroll.Me to unsubscribe to some of those pesky emails that just won’t go away. Click ‘Unsubscribe’ in Unroll.Me and you’ll never see it again. They’ll either successfully unsubscribe you, or delete the email as it comes into your inbox. Either way, it’s amazing.

If you haven’t already, give it a try:

We’ve written about Unroll.me, a service that helps users manage their junk email and subscriptions, before — most recently when it was redesigned in April. Now the company is sharing some stats about its growth. For one thing, it says it has more than 100,000 subscribers…continue reading

It Doesn’t Matter If It’s Someone Else’s Fault

Trent is spot on with this one. As I constantly remind my kids, you control your own attitude. You may not be able to control the circumstances, but what defines you as a person is how you deal with them.

It doesn’t matter that some other driver damaged your car. It doesn’t matter that some evil boss caused you to lose your job or office politics have kept you from being promoted. It doesn’t matter that life seems to keep you from getting ahead…continue reading (via The Simple Dollar)

All the New Stuff in IFTTT for iOS, and What You Can Do with It

I’m a big fan of IFTTT (IF This Then That), beginning with the number of channels available on their website and continuing on to the constant updates and innovation. Now the iOS app adds a whole new level of integration.

I know Dropbox (in the example below) has an auto-upload feature in iOS, but it’s all or nothing. IFTTT allows you to define what happens when you take photos, sending some to Dropbox and some to other services. It’s completely customizable.

Here’s the thing: I’m happy with the way most of the services IFTTT integrates with work on their own. IFTTT just makes them that much better.

The If This Then That iOS app was released a few weeks ago, and people have had plenty of time to create some clever recipes that integrate the new iOS-specific features. The iOS app extends the experience of IFTTT more than you might think. Here’s everything you can do with it….continue reading.
